New Era hat size chart

New Era 59FIFTY size chart (fitted)

The 59FIFTY is the classic closed-back fitted cap. New Era's official sizing chart lists these sizes:

59FIFTY size Inches CM
7 22 55.8
7⅛ 22⅜ 56.8
7¼ 22¾ 57.7
7⅜ 23⅛ 58.7
7½ 23½ 59.6
7⅝ 23⅞ 60.6
7¾ 24¼ 61.5
7⅞ 24⅝ 62.5
8 25 63.5

New Era's advice if you're between sizes: round up. Its kids' 59FIFTY runs 6 to 6¾ (48.2–53.9 cm). New Era also notes that the cm on the label may not match head circumference exactly, so go by the size number.

Fair point for New Era: the 59FIFTY is one of the few mainstream fitted caps sold all the way up to 8. If you're an 8 or under and you like a fitted cap, it's a real option. One of our customers, Soraya W., described the problem at the top end: "I am an 8 in traditional New Era sizing and even an 8 is slightly small."

New Era 39THIRTY (stretch-fit) and 9FORTY (adjustable)

Size Inches CM
39THIRTY S/M 22⅜–23⅛ 56.8–58.7
39THIRTY M/L 23⅛–23⅞ 58.7–60.6
39THIRTY L/XL 23⅞–24⅝ 60.6–62.5
9FORTY One Size 22–23⅞ 55.8–60.6

The 39THIRTY's largest size, L/XL, tops out at a 7⅞ head. The 9FORTY one-size adjustable stops at 23⅞ in, which is a 7⅝. Above that, a New Era snapback is on its last snap or not closing.

Flexfit size chart

Flexfit caps use a stretch band, so each size covers a range. Flexfit's own sizing chart is published as an image we couldn't read as text, so the figures below come from the manufacturer spec sheet for the best-known model, the Flexfit 6277 Wooly Combed cap, as distributed by SanMar:

Flexfit 6277 size Hat sizes Head (inches, as printed)
S/M 6¾–7¼ 21¼–22¾
L/XL 7⅛–7⅝ 22⅜–23⅞
XL/2XL 7⅜–8 24⅜–25⅝

Read the XL/2XL row carefully. The spec sheet prints the hat-size range as 7⅜–8 but the head-size range as 24⅜–25⅝ in. Those don't line up (7⅜ is about 23⅛ in). Converted with the hat-size formula, the head-size column works out to roughly 7¾–8⅛, so XL/2XL is best for 7¾–8 heads, and its fit at 7⅜–7⅝ is uncertain. The spec sheet also says XL/2XL comes only in some colours (Black, Dark Grey, Dark Navy and Navy).

The Flexfit 110 (a snapback with a stretch band) is listed as one size fitting hat sizes 6½–7⅞ (20⅜–24⅝ in). That's a wide range, and one of the better "one size" options for a 7¾ head.

Richardson 112 and 112 XL size chart

The Richardson 112 is the trucker cap you've seen on half the job sites in America. It's a snapback. Richardson lists four sizes for it: Youth, SM, MD-LG and XL, with Youth, Small and X-Large available only in select colours.

Richardson 112 Approx. hat sizes Approx. head (in / cm)
112 OSFM (MD-LG) 7–7¾ 22–24¼ / 56–62
112 XL (R112XL) 7¼–7⅞ 22¾–24⅝ / 58–63

The hat-size ranges come from a Richardson size chart published by a licensed retailer. Richardson's own Mid Pro chart places OSFM/MD-LG at the 24¼ in (62 cm) mark and XL at 24⅝ in (63 cm), which agrees with those upper limits. So the 112 XL buys you about one extra eighth of a size over the regular 112, and tops out at a 7⅞.

Where each brand runs out

Hat Largest listed size Largest head
New Era 9FORTY (adjustable) One size 23⅞ in / 60.6 cm (7⅝)
New Era 39THIRTY L/XL L/XL 24⅝ in / 62.5 cm (7⅞)
New Era 59FIFTY 8 25 in / 63.5 cm
Flexfit 110 (one size) OSFA 24⅝ in (7⅞)
Flexfit 6277 XL/2XL XL/2XL Size 8 (25⅝ in as printed)
Richardson 112 XL XL About 7⅞ (24⅝ in / 63 cm)
MONGO snapbacks XL–2XL 8½ (26.7 in / 68 cm)

So which should you buy?

  • 7⅜ or under: almost anything fits. One-size caps from New Era, Flexfit and Richardson cover you. You don't need an XL hat.
  • 7½–7⅝: you're at the top of most one-size caps. A 59FIFTY in your size, a Flexfit L/XL or XL/2XL, or the Richardson 112 should work. MONGO fits too, with room to spare.
  • 7¾–7⅞: one-size caps are out. Your choices narrow to a 59FIFTY in your exact size, Flexfit XL/2XL (limited colours), the Richardson 112 XL (top of its range), or a hat built big, like MONGO.
  • 8: the 59FIFTY 8 and Flexfit XL/2XL are at their limits. Snapbacks from the big three won't close. MONGO is in the middle of its range here.
  • 8⅛–8½: none of the three brands' published charts go this high. This is exactly what MONGO is for.

The other thing brand charts don't show is crown depth. A cap can technically close at your size and still sit on top of your head like a bottle cap. Adam B. told us another brand was "too shallow." MONGO hats have a deeper crown than standard caps, so they sit down where a hat should.
