How common is a 8¼ head?
In the US Army's ANSUR II survey (4,082 men and 1,986 women measured), the median head circumference was 57.4 cm for men and 56.0 cm for women, and the 95th percentile was 60.1 cm for men and 59.7 cm for women. An 8¼ head (65.3–66.3 cm) is more than 5 cm above the men's 95th percentile, far beyond what the published ANSUR II summary breaks out. Very rare. You are not imagining it when every hat in the shop sits on top of your head.

Do one-size caps fit a 8¼?
No. A one-size cap at 8¼ is a cap balancing on your head. Even the largest fitted cap in the three charts we checked, a New Era 59FIFTY 8, is about ¾ inch too small.
