To clean a foam trucker hat, spot clean the foam front with a soft brush or cloth and a little mild detergent in cold water, wash the mesh and sweatband with a quick cold hand wash, rinse without wringing, and air dry it crown-up away from heat. Don't soak the foam for long, don't scrub it hard, and keep it out of the washer, dishwasher, and dryer.
Truckers are two hats in one: a foam front that holds the logo and shape, and mesh panels that breathe. They need slightly different handling.
Foam vs mesh: what each part needs
| Part | Clean with | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Foam front panel | Soft brush or cloth, mild detergent, cold water, light pressure | Long soaks, hard scrubbing, wringing, heat |
| Mesh side and back panels | Cold soak and a soft toothbrush | Stiff brushes that snag; hot water |
| Sweatband | Baking soda paste or detergent, toothbrush | Bleach |
| Brim | Damp cloth | Bending it while wet |
Why foam is fussy
Foam is a sponge. It soaks up water and detergent, holds it, and can crease or flatten if you squeeze it hard while it's wet. Heat makes it worse. So the goal is to get the foam clean without saturating it for hours, and to let it dry in the right shape.
Step by step
- Spot-test. Dab a damp white cloth on a hidden spot to check the color doesn't run.
- Clean the foam front first. Dip a soft brush or cloth in cold water with a few drops of mild detergent and work it over the foam in small circles. Light pressure. Wipe off suds with a clean damp cloth.
- Treat the sweatband. Brush in a little baking soda paste or detergent and leave it 15 minutes. (Heavy staining: sweat stain guide.)
- Wash the mesh. A short cold dip (a few minutes, not half an hour) and a soft toothbrush clear dust and sweat from the mesh. Try to keep the foam front from sitting submerged.
- Rinse with cool water until the suds are gone.
- Press, don't wring. Blot the foam with a towel; never twist the hat.
- Air dry crown-up on a rolled towel or something round so the foam dries in its normal curve. Keep it out of direct sun and away from heaters. Foam can take longer to dry than the mesh, so give it a full day.
Cleaning the MONGO XL Foam Trucker
The MONGO XL Foam Trucker (Black, and Green/Black) has a foam front panel with durable mesh side and back panels, and the same care label as every MONGO hat: hand wash cold, mild detergent, no bleach, no washing machine or dryer, air dry crown-up. The steps above are how we'd do it. The mesh is what makes it a good gym and hot-weather hat (see our gym hats guide), which also means it'll need cleaning more often. Little and often is easier on the foam than one big soak.
Can you put a foam trucker hat in the washing machine?
We wouldn't. Tumbling crushes the foam front and can permanently crease it, and the mesh can snag. The dishwasher is a bad idea for the same reasons plus heat. And the dryer is out: see can you put a hat in the dryer.
Fixing a dented foam front
Dampen the foam with cool water, push the dent out from inside, stuff the crown with a rolled towel, and let it air dry. Don't use a hair dryer or steam up close on foam.
If your trucker sits high or you're on the last snap, it's not the foam's fault. Measure your head: at 23.6 in (60 cm) or more, our trucker hats for big heads fit sizes 7½ to 8½.
FAQ
How do you clean a foam trucker hat?
Spot clean the foam front with a soft brush or cloth and mild detergent in cold water, give the mesh and sweatband a short cold hand wash, rinse without wringing, and air dry crown-up away from heat.
Can you soak a foam trucker hat?
Keep soaks short. Foam holds water and can crease or flatten when saturated, so a few minutes for the mesh is enough, and try to keep the foam front out of the water.
Can you put a foam trucker hat in the washing machine?
We don't recommend it. Tumbling can crush and crease the foam and snag the mesh. The MONGO Foam Trucker label says no machine wash or dryer.
How long does a foam trucker hat take to dry?
Give it a full day crown-up. The foam usually dries slower than the mesh; a fan helps, but skip heaters and direct sun.
How do I fix a dent in a foam trucker hat?
Dampen the foam with cool water, push the dent out from inside, stuff the crown with a rolled towel, and let it air dry. Avoid heat.
