Quick answer: The average adult man's head is about 57 cm (22½ inches) around, a hat size 7⅛–7¼; the average woman's is about 55 cm (21¾ inches), a size 7. Head circumference in adults follows a bell curve with a standard deviation of roughly 1.4 cm, so a 60 cm (23⅝ in, size 7½) head is around the 95th percentile and a 62 cm (7¾) head is bigger than about 99 in 100 men. Your head is big mostly because your parents' heads are big: heritability is about 75–90%. In adults it is almost never a medical issue. It is, however, a hat issue, because "one size fits most" hats are built for 56–59 cm.
What's actually average
The most-cited measurement of adult heads is a 1992 study of 354 British adults (Bushby and colleagues, Archives of Disease in Childhood), which found a mean of 57.2 cm for men and 55.2 cm for women, with head size rising about 0.9 mm for every centimeter of height. A University of Washington lab put US adults at 57 cm and 55 cm. An anthropometric sample used to build head models for helmets and eyewear found 57.5 cm for men (95th percentile 60.5 cm) and 55.7 cm for women. Population matters: a 2025 Hong Kong study of 1,301 adults found medians of 54 cm for men and 53 cm for women.
| Adult men | Circumference | Hat size |
|---|---|---|
| Average | 57.2 cm / 22½ in | 7⅛–7¼ |
| About the 90th percentile | 59.4 cm / 23⅜ in | 7⅜–7½ |
| About the 95th percentile | 60 cm / 23⅝ in | 7½ |
| About the 98th percentile | 60.5 cm / 23¾ in | 7⅝ |
| Roughly 1 in 100 | 61+ cm / 24+ in | 7⅝ and up |
Percentiles are estimated from the Bushby mean and standard deviation (1.41 cm) for a man of average height, assuming a normal distribution. Taller men have larger heads on average, so a 6'3" man at 60 cm is less unusual than the table suggests.
That last row is the important one. If you wear a 7⅝ or larger, you are in roughly the top 1–2% of men. There is nothing wrong with you; there is simply almost nobody at the hat factory designing for you.
Why your head is big
Mostly genetics
Head circumference is one of the most heritable things about you. Twin studies put it at about 90% heritable in infancy and 75% in adulthood (Haworth et al., Nature Communications, 2019, in a sample of 45,000 people). If one parent has a big head, you probably do too, and so will your kids. A 2022 genome study found dozens of genetic variants involved, and a genetic correlation of 0.91 between head circumference and the volume inside the skull, which is a formal way of saying a big head is mostly a big skull.
Partly height and build
Taller people have bigger heads, but the effect is modest: correlations with height are around 0.3–0.4 in adult men, and Bushby's data give about 0.9 mm of circumference per centimeter of height. A 6'4" man is expected to be roughly 1.3 cm bigger around than a 5'10" man. That explains some big heads, not most.
Not your brain, not your intelligence
Big head, big brain, big brain, smart: the internet loves this chain and the evidence doesn't support it. Brain volume and IQ are correlated, but weakly; a 2015 meta-analysis of more than 8,000 people concluded the link is "robust but weak" and of "little practical relevance." A 2024 systematic review of head circumference and intelligence found most studies had serious limitations and none met quality criteria in adults. Enjoy the compliment, don't bank on it.
When a big head is a medical question
Doctors define macrocephaly as a head circumference more than two standard deviations above the mean, roughly the 97th–98th percentile, which by definition includes 2–3% of everyone. In children it's tracked because a head that crosses percentile lines quickly can signal fluid build-up or other problems. In adults, a head that has always been big is almost always "benign familial macrocephaly," meaning it runs in the family and causes nothing. The things that would make a doctor interested are different: a head that is growing in adulthood, or a large head together with new headaches, vision changes, or other neurological symptoms. A steady size-8 head since you were a teenager is not one of those things. (Sources: StatPearls, Cleveland Clinic.)
Why hats make it feel like a problem
A US hat size is your circumference in inches divided by pi, so 22 in = 7, 23⅝ in = 7½, 25⅛ in = 8. Adjustable and "one size fits most" hats are cut for about 21½–23⅜ inches (6⅞–7⅜) and stretch to perhaps 7⅝ at their loosest snap. That covers roughly 95–98% of men, which is why manufacturers stop there. The remaining few percent, the 24-inch-and-up heads, get a hat that either won't close or sits on top of the head like a lid, because standard hats scale width without adding crown depth. That's not a big-head problem; it's a design decision you were left out of.
The fix is a hat built for the top of the curve: a deeper crown and a closure that starts where standard hats end. That's what we make. Every MONGO hat fits 7½ through 8½ (60–68 cm), free US shipping, and a 30-day fit guarantee that covers return shipping if we're wrong about you.

One more thing
Heads can change a little. At Barry Bonds's 2011 trial, the Giants' equipment manager testified under oath that Bonds's cap size went from 7¼ to 7⅜ over his years with the team. Most of us get our big heads the honest way, from our parents, and keep the same size from about age 20 on.
Quick answers
What is the average head circumference?
About 57 cm (22½ in) for adult men and 55 cm (21¾ in) for adult women, roughly hat sizes 7⅛–7¼ and 7.
What head size is considered big?
For men, 60 cm (23⅝ in, size 7½) is around the 95th percentile; 61 cm (24 in, 7⅝) and up is roughly the top 1–2%. Hat brands generally call anything 7½ and over a big head.
Is a big head genetic?
Mostly, yes. Twin studies estimate head circumference is 75–90% heritable.
Does a big head mean a big brain or higher IQ?
Head size tracks skull volume, but the link between brain volume and intelligence is weak, and studies of head circumference and IQ in adults are of poor quality. Don't count on it.
Should I see a doctor about my big head?
If it has always been big, no. Adult macrocephaly is usually benign and familial. See a doctor if your head is growing, or if it comes with new headaches, vision changes or other neurological symptoms.
