What to look for
Three things. First, a real size range that reaches your measurement; "L/XL" means different things at different brands (Sunday Afternoons' L/XL stops at 62.5 cm, Sungrubbies' 4XL goes to 67 cm). Second, a brim of at least 3 inches; anything less is a cap with pretensions. Third, a stated UPF rating, ideally 50+, which blocks about 98% of UV. A chin cord matters if you'll wear it on water or in wind, because a hat that fits a big head is also a hat with a lot of sail area.

Sungrubbies is a sun-protection specialist that sizes its men's line up to 4XL, and it publishes the centimeters for every size: XL 60–61, 2XL 62–63, 3XL 64–65, 4XL 66–67 cm.
