Trucker Hats for Big Heads: A Buyer's Guide

Most one-size truckers stop at about 7¾. Here is what to look for in a trucker that fits a big head, and how to measure before you buy.

The best trucker hat for a big head has three things: a band that goes past your head size (not just to it), a crown deep enough to sit around your head instead of on top, and a snapback with more room than standard. A classic one-size trucker like the Richardson 112 is listed at 22–24¼ in (7–7¾). If you measure 23.6 in (7½) or more, look for a trucker sized XL or larger.

Measure first so you know which group you're in. The hat size calculator takes about a minute.

What to look for

Feature Why it matters What to check
Band size range Wearing the hat on its last snap means it's too small. Your head should fall in the middle of the stated range.
Crown depth A shallow crown perches on top of a big head. "Deep" or "high" crown in the specs, or reviews that mention depth
Foam vs. structured front Foam is light and holds a tall front. Structured fabric is more durable. Pick for the look you want. It doesn't change the fit.
Mesh back Airflow. Mesh also gives a little more than solid fabric. Stiff mesh holds its shape better over time.

How to measure for a trucker

  1. Wrap a soft tape around your head about ⅛ inch above your eyebrows and ears.
  2. Write down the inches. Hat size is inches ÷ π (3.14).
  3. No tape? Use a phone charger cable or a piece of string, then lay it flat along a ruler. See how to measure your head.

Under 23.6 in Under 7½ A standard one-size trucker will probably fit.

FAQ

Do trucker hats fit big heads?

Standard one-size truckers fit up to about 7¾ (24¼ in). Big heads need an XL or extended-range trucker. MONGO's XL Foam Trucker fits 7½–8½.

What's the best trucker hat for an 8 or bigger?

Look for a trucker whose stated range goes past your size, not one that just reaches it. At 8 to 8½, that means a big-head brand. MONGO's covers 7½–8½, and Big Hat Store goes larger.

Foam trucker or mesh trucker for a big head?

Fit comes from band size and crown depth, not from the front panel material. Choose foam or fabric for the look you like.

Can I machine wash a foam trucker?

We don't recommend it. Hand wash cold and air dry crown-up.
